Welcome to Cambodia! Upon arrival at the Siem Reap airport, you will go through customs (make sure to obtain a Cambodian Visa on Arrival for an expedited arrival). Once you have cleared Immigration and Customs, proceed into the arrival area. You will be met by your private guide and driver for the transfer to your hotel for check in. (This service is on a private basis.)
Siem Reap is the best option for an international traveler's base from which to explore the Angkor temples. If not for the tourism boom brought on by the awesome sites around the city, Siem Reap might have been another sleepy Khmer village. Instead we find a bustling tourist town, complete with a well-named Pub Street, food vendors, luxury hotels, backpacking hostels, and the international travelers that drive it all. Sure, you'll probably want to spend most of your time outside the city, but don't underestimate the awesome opportunity to hit the town and mingle, bargain, eat, and drink your way through Siem Reap.
Today after breakfast, you will be picked up by your private guide and transferred to Angkor. Angkor is visually, architecturally and artistically breathtaking. Angkor is one of the most important archaeological sites in South-East Asia if not the world. Stretching over some 400 km2, including forested area, Angkor Archaeological Park contains the magnificent remains of the different capitals of the Khmer Empire, from the 9th to the 15th century.
The morning is set aside for a visit to the main temple, Angkor Wat. Angkor Wat is one of mankind’s greatest achievements, and the intricate carvings at the temple of Angkor Wat demonstrate the skill of the Khmer builders. It had been constructed in the jungle in the early 12th century, then two centuries later, was mysteriously abandoned by the Khmer civilization. The jungle soon overwhelmed Angkor Wat, hiding it for several centuries with thick tropical foliage. There was a bite left to see except an occasional protruding building stone. In 1861, a French naturalist accidentally came across the jungle-veiled ruins. Now Angkor Wat is the main reason tourists come to visit Cambodia.
Later in the day visit Ta Prohm. Built in 1186, Ta Prohm was dedicated to the mother of Jayavarman VII. Its atmospheric dark gray sandstone towers and courtyards exude an aura of reverence and mystery. Unlike the other temples of Angkor, Ta Prohm has been left to the elements and looks very much as the other temples must have when they were “discovered” by Henri Mouhot in the 1860s. Navigating through its narrow passages, immense kapok trees and its jungle-covered ruins is an unparalleled experience and one of the highlights of Angkor.
Lunch will be at a local restaurant. Enjoy the evening free at your own leisure. For interesting people watching, venture down to Pub Street and the Siem Reap Night Market, where you can buy a diverse range of goods.
After breakfast today, you will be picked up for another tour exploring Cambodia's ruins! Your excursion will start with a visit to the South Gate of Angkor Thom. From there, head to the temples of Bayon, Baphoun, Phimean Akas, The Royal Enclosure, Terrace of Elephants and Leper King. Here, the Buddhist monks will celebrate a private blessing ceremony for you, wishing you health and a safe journey.
A delicious lunch will be served today at a local Restaurant, before you are returned to the hotel for a break from the mid-day heat.
Happy Valentine's Day! The romance and adventure of experiencing this holiday in Cambodia, is sure to be incomparable to any other! After checking out of your Siem Reap accommodations, you will be transferred to the airport for your domestic flight to Sihanoukville.
