Wilderness Basecamp

Safari and Canvas Tanzania - Classic

Serengeti, Tanzania

Prices From: $2,294 per person

Although Tanzania boasts some of the world’s most beautiful lodges, for a true safari experience nothing can compare to spending the night in a canvas tent close to the wildlife and the beautiful Serengeti night sky. If you love nature and the great outdoors (and we do mean Great!) than the Safari and Canvas itinerary is for you: safari by day, camp by night and truly interact with Tanzania's incredibly unique environment throughout your entire stay.

This budget option includes a drive from Arusha into the Serengeti National Park, not a flight, so that you can explore the Northern Tanzanian landscape on the ground.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 - Arusha

Meet at the airport/Arusha arrival point and transfer to your lodge for a pre-safari briefing. There is a optional visit to a craft market or visit to one of Arusha assistance projects available (ask for more details).

Overnight: Ahadi Lodge (Dinner included)

Day 2 - Arusha - Serengeti

After an early breakfast, we are transferred straight into the heart of the Serengeti! Together with our guide, we set off to explore these great plains. Criss-crossed with forested riverine valleys, the Serengeti plays home to millions of Africa’s large mammals, making this one of the world’s most famous wildlife destinations.

Overnight: Nasikia Central Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner included)

Day 3 - Serengeti

Enjoy a full day game driving in the Serengeti. The best time for the wildebeest migration is from December to June but there are spectacular wildlife sights at anytime of year.

Overnight: Nasikia Central Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner included)

Day 4 - Serengeti

Once again, we can set out for an all day game drive – or choose to take an early morning game drive before returning for lunch and a short rest. In the mid-afternoon, we set off again in search of the predators beginning their night stalking.

Overnight: Nasikia Central Camp (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner included)

Day 5 - Serengeti - Ngorongoro

Enjoy more game driving in the Serengeti before heading to the Ngorongoro Crater. Have lunch en-route at Olduvai Gorge and enjoy a view of the archaeological sites (and visit the museum) where early human tools and fossils have been found. Continue onto the Rhino Lodge on the Ngorongoro crater rim for overnight.

Overnight: Rhino Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner included)

Day 6 - Ngorongoro - Manyara

Ngorongoro is a collapsed volcano - an incredible natural amphitheatre, 25 km across and teeming with all of the African big game. In the early morning, you will descent into the crater for spectacular scenery and game viewing in what has been described as the eighth wonder of the world. In late afternoon, we transfer to atop the Manyara Escarpment for overnight.

Overnight: Endoro Lodge (Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner included)

Day 7 - Manyara - Arusha

We enjoy a morning walk before transferring back to Arusha.

Overnight: Onward travel to Zanzibar or Dar es Salaam is possible. (Breakfast and Lunch included)

Ahadi Lodge is located on the northern side of Arusha in ‘suburbia’. It is considered an oasis amongst a busy world outside the gates. They have a great pool and are known for their excellent hospitality and cuisine.

Nasikia Central Camp

Nasikia Central Camp offers an intimate camping experience, deep in the bush of the central Serengeti. This fully ensuite camp offers comfortable and rustic facilities, making it the perfect accommodation for anyone looking for an adventurous alternative to the standard safari lodge. Despite, it's distance from the real world, the camp provides excellent service and a welcoming team, to help make your safari camping experience as comfortable as possible. With high quality canvas between your bed and the sounds of the African night, this tented camp provides the ideal accommodation for lovers of the great outdoors, while retaining the coziness of a comfortable bed, a hot shower (water is limited...remember you're out in the bush!), satisfying cuisine and friendly staff.

Rhino Lodge

Rhino Lodge is ideally located on the edge of the Ngorongoro crater rim. Rhino Lodge offers a perfect base from which to explore the Ngorongoro crater and its surroundings. Game drives into the crater, and, for the more adventurous, walking safaris in the forest reserve and visits to nearby Maasai villages, can all be arranged from the lodge. The Lodge was originally the home of Ngorongoro’s first conservator, and its developers have maintained the house’s original rustic, low-impact style and natural setting. The 24 basic yet comfortable ensuite rooms all have balconies with forest views and the grazing area of the buffaloes, zebra, waterbuck and elephants.

Endoro Lodge

Endoro Lodge one of the very few places in the world where you can immerse your self unreservedly into natures beauty. The lodge is located on the lower slopes of the Ngorongoro Crater rim and adjacent to the Ngorongoro Conservation Area forest line and the thick pristine mountain forest. The lodge straddles the Conservation areas perimeter and is just a short ride away to the Loduare Park Gate. Wildlife from the unfenced forest including Elephants roam freely into the property giving visitors a very rare opportunity to really mix and mingle with the wild. Endoro Lodge features all private twin or double rooms. Here, we utilize the standard rooms with ensuite bathrooms to the right of the main dining area.
