Best Luxury Travel Japan Destinations

Japan's extraordinarily ubiquitous hospitality makes the notion of luxury travel Japan utterly attainable. In fact, given that the country boasts an inherent propensity for politeness and respect, it's hard not to feel royally pampered in the Land of the Rising Sun.

To truly immerse yourself in Japanese hospitality, stay in a ryokan (traditional Japanese inn) and succumb to time-honored customs complete with authentic roll-out futon beds on tatami floor mats. The highlight of a ryokan stay comes in the evening, when guests are treated to kaiseki-ryori (traditional Japanese haute cuisine). Kaiseki meals feature seasonal ingredients that are incorporated into several small dishes of exquisite taste, color, texture and presentation. Regardless of region or season, a ryokan dinner is an incredible opportunity to savor the finest cuisine of Japan.

The shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo follows the historical Tokaido ("East Sea Road") southeast one hour to Hakone, an onsen (hot springs) resort town inside Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. A tranquil afternoon spent at an onsen is a must for any luxury travel Japan trip, and many ryokans in Hakone feature private outdoor rotenburo baths with striking views of snow-capped mountains. Guests receive a yukata bathrobe and geta clogs upon arrival to ensure immediate relaxation!

To explore a bit before melting into the hot springs, take a cable car up to sulfur springs in the Owakudani (Great Boiling Valley) and look for Mt. Fuji, or check out the Picasso exhibit at the open air museum.

Takayama is a picturesque mountain village with a well-preserved old town. The narrow streets are lined with antique wooden merchant houses converted into museums, tea houses, and sake breweries. A temple trail of hand-crafted masterpieces encircles the town, and just ten minutes away is the Hida Folk Village open-air museum of around 30 gassh?-zukuri (traditional Edo-era farmhouses with dramatically sloped roofs to shed heavy snowfall and house silkworms). To see a functioning community of 114 gassho houses, catch a mountain bus to the UNESCO-inscribed Shirakawago village (the trip takes about an hour from Takayama).

Takayama's Hanaougi Bettei Iiyama ryokan wholly embodies the definition of luxury travel Japan. Rooms are lined in cypress wood, and some feature private gardens and open-air baths. Moreover, kaiseki dinners showcase the region's prized beef and seasonal delicacies such as miso dip beef grilled on hoba leaves.

Less than an hour from Kyoto is Nara, a pristine collection of the world's oldest wooden buildings and Japan's largest concentration of National Treasures. Nara Park contains the lion's share of prominent Buddhist temples, serene Zen gardens and mystical Shinto shrines. The park is well known for its enchanting primeval forest, mountain views, springtime sakura (cherry blossoms), and sociable resident deer who enjoy protected status as heralds of the Kasuga Taisha god.

The Nara National Museum’s Buddhism exhibitions and National Treasure Hall are world class and worth a visit. Also fascinating is Naramachi, an Edo-era merchant district with quaint museums, cafes, and historical wooden machiya townhouses.

Nara is usually a day trip from Kyoto, but an overnight stay is a great way to slow down the pace of a Japan tour. If you plan far enough in advance, book a room at the Musashino Ryokan inside Nara Park. You’ll discover the true meaning of luxury travel Japan and savor a couple days strolling over mossy bridges through a marvelous cultural cache in the absence of hurried crowds and subway schedules.
