This sample itinerary will allow you to experience a unique view of Tanzania in luxury and relaxation.

Begin with a visit to the picturesque island of Zanzibar where you will be able to lounge and relax for several days.

Then depart for the Ruaha Game Reserve. Enjoy the game at Ruaha before departing for Mahale Mountains National Park, where you can observe chimps in their natural environment as well as lounge on the unspoiled and pristine beaches of Lake Tanganyika. Continue to the Selous Game Reserve, the largest in Africa and roughly the size of Switzerland. Finish your adventures in Dar es Salaam, where you will be able to explore the city on your own.

Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 - Arusha - Zanzibar

This morning we will meet you at your Arusha hotel to transfer you to the airport, for your flight to Zanzibar. Upon arrival in Zanzibar, you will be picked up and transferred to the Zanzibar Retreat Hotel.

After checking in, you will have the rest of the day at leisure to relax and enjoy the island.

Zanzibar Retreat Hotel is a lovely boutique hotel located on the famous Matemwe beach on the North East coast of Zanzibar. The hotel faces the longest interrupted stretch of finest white coral sand on the Spice Island making it a perfect location for long walks and swimming at high tide.

Day 2 - Zanzibar

Enjoy the day relaxing on the white sandy beaches of Matemwe Beach.

The hotel features the highest quality local materials, with rooms including beautiful wood carvings, hardboard verandas and are traditional Makuti (coconut thatch) roofs. On the beach are small Makuti bandas giving plenty of shade and space for relaxing and enjoying the exclusive view of the beach.

Day 3 - Zanzibar

Today you will be transferred to Stone Town at 10:00 am. It is about 50 minutes by car.

You have the day free to enjoy wandering through the many alleyways, streets, and bazaars. Take in the beautiful mosques and the craftsmanship of grand Arab houses.

You will be checking into the Zanzibar Palace Hotel, located in the heart of Stone Town. The hotel reflects Zanzibar's rich history in integrating Arabian, Indian and English designs in its rooms.

Day 4 - Zanzibar - Ruaha

After a day and evening exploring Stone Town, it's off to Safari! You will be picked up and transferred to the airport to board your flight to Ruaha National Park.

Ruaha is Tanzania's second largest national park. On arrival early this afternoon, you will be met and transferred to the Ruaha River Lodge to check in and spend the rest of the day at leisure.

During your stay at Ruaha River Lodge, enjoy morning and afternoon game drives in shared open vehicles. The highly trained English-speaking guides will lead you to an abundance of leopards, lions, cheetahs and hunting dogs as well as several rare species including the Greater and Lesser Kudu, Roan and Sable antelopes.

Day 5 - Ruaha

As mentioned above, during your stay at Ruaha River Lodge, enjoy morning and afternoon game drives in shared open vehicles. The highly trained English-speaking guides will lead you to an abundance of leopards, lions, cheetahs and hunting dogs as well as several rare species including the Greater and Lesser Kudu, Roan and Sable antelopes.

You will also be able to partake in walking safaris, accompanied by an armed escort and guide, who will interpret the spoor and translate the action that went on before. Walks leave twice daily, in the early morning and in the afternoon around 4:00pm.

Day 6 - Ruaha - Mahale

This morning you'll be driven to catch the flight to Mahale Mountains National Park in Western Tanzania.

Upon arrival in the magical Mahale, you will be met and taken to board a dhow, which will take you down the lake to the isolated beauties of Greystroke Mahale.

Greystoke Mahale sits on pristine, white sandy beaches overlooking the turquoise water of Lake Tanganyika, with the forested slopes of the 8,000-foot Mahale Mountains rising in the background. All the rooms and structures are built using sustainable materials sourced from the lake. All the wood was reclaimed from wrecked or retired dhows bought from villages along the lake shore.

During your stay, enjoy one chimp trek per full day at the lodge, as well as walking and boat tours.

Day 7 - Mahale Mountains National Park

Spend your time at Greystroke Mahale interacting with the chimps, as well as enjoying the beautiful lake and surrounding lush wilderness. You can enjoy one chimp trek per full day at the lodge.

As you observe the chimps, you will become aware of the subtle relationships and differences between the members of the chimp families.

Day 8 - Mahale

Enjoy another day in Mahale. In addition to chimp treks, other activities include hiking into the forest to look for birds and butterflies, as well as the other shy mammals that live there.

You can also simply enjoy the ice cold pools fed by natural mountain waterfalls, dawn kayaking trips on the lake, and sunsets on the old wooden dhow lazily following the shoreline.

Day 9 - Mahale - Selous

Today you will be transferred to the airstrip to board your flight departing at 10:15am for Selous Game Reserve, the largest game reserve in Africa.

Upon arrival at the Selous Airstrip, you will be met and transferred to the Lake Manze Tented Camp for the evening.

Lake Manze Camp is a great rustic camp which gives guests a real feeling of wilderness, while still providing all the comforts you would expect from a good safari lodge.The tents all have large comfortable beds, room for hanging clothes, and an en-suite bathroom with a proper flush toilet and hot-and-cold shower. It is the only lodge in the Selous which has chosen not to have any electricity - instead your evening will be spent with the light of storm lanterns, which results in a magical atmosphere.

Days 11 - 12 - Selous Game Reserve

You will spend the next few days exploring the wonders of the Selous Game Reserve. Your game package includes morning/afternoon game drives in shared open vehicles.

The feeling of wilderness at Lake Manze Tented Camp is further enhanced by its position on the floodplain of Lake Manze. Animals come down to drink here - and the old, well-worn elephant trail which runs around the lake and right in front of the camp is a popular route. This makes for great game viewing opportunities from the comfort of your own tent.

Days 13 - 14 - Selous

Enjoy the next two days at Lake Manze Tented Camp in game viewing activities.

Day 14 - Selous - Dar Es Salaam

This morning enjoy the last game drive of your safari. In the afternoon you will be transferred to the airstrip for your flight to Dar es Salaam.

Upon arrival in Dar Es Salaam, you will be met and transferred to your hotel, the Southern Sun Dar Es Salaam. After checking in, you will have the rest of the evening at leisure.

Day 15 - Dar Es Salaam

Spend the next few days in Dar es Salaam exploring at your leisure. Dar es Salaam ("Haven of Peace") was founded in 1862 and has been influenced by the Sultans, Germans and Bristish, among others. The city, which started as a fishing village in the mid 19th century, is now Tanzania's largest city, and is a vital port and trading center in East Africa.

Day 16 - Dar Es Salaam

Today you will have another day at leisure. If you would like to get out of the city and explore the surrounding coast, you may want to check out Bagamoyo, the oldest town in Tanzania. Bagamoyo is steeped in culture and has influences from the Arabs, Indians, Germans and British. It also served as one of the main ports used by slave traders.

You can visit the various ruins, beautiful beaches and interesting museum. Much of the architecture in the old town is Arabic. You may also want to visit the medieval Kaole Ruins, a mosque dating back to the 13th century. You can book this optional trip at the concierge of the Southern Sun.

Day 17 - Dar Es Salaam Departure

Sadly this is your last day in Tanzania. In the evening, you will be met at your hotel and transferred to the airport to board your flight home.

Ruaha River Lodge

Situated in a fantastic location right on the river, Ruaha River Lodge is the oldest lodge in Ruaha National Park. Unpretentious and relaxed, it is owned and run by the Fox family. Although the lodge is relatively large, guests are divided between two different dining and lounge areas when it is full, so the atmosphere is slightly more personal than you might expect, and the service generally friendly.

Greystoke Mahale

On a far-flung beach along the eastern shores of Lake Tanganyika, below a huge story-book tropical forest, is the tiny sanctuary of Greystoke Mahale. The water is as clear as gin, the air scented and the living is very easy indeed.

The forested slopes of the Mahale Mountains rise behind camp, home to the world's largest known population pf chimpanzees, with approximately 1000 individuals inhabiting the national park. Each day you can venture out into the forest, to observe and commune with these, our closest relatives, as they groom, wrestle and forage across the leafy floor.

Lake Manze Tented Camp

Lake Manze Camp opened in 2007 as a sister camp to the Selous Impala and Mdonya Old River Camp in Ruaha National Park. Since then it has developed a reputation as a great rustic camp which gives guests a real feeling of wilderness, while still providing all the comforts you would expect from a good safari lodge.The tents all have large comfortable beds, room for hanging clothes, and an en-suite bathroom with a proper flush toilet and hot-and-cold shower.
