  • Meals: B, L, D

Lodge Activities

This morning you can wake early and take your inclusive guided drive into the National Park area of Sesriem and onwards towards Sossusvlei, around 70km from the Park entrance. The entrance opens at sunrise and this is the best time of day to see the dunes. The desert can be extremely hot in the middle of the day, so please remember to bring plenty of water, a hat and good walking shoes!

Enjoy the amazing scenery of the desert, and maybe take a short walk to Deadvlei, a bizarre collection of ancient camelthorn trees, or climb the nearby dunes. Return to Sesriem and perhaps take a look at Sesriem Canyon before returning to the lodge.

Swakopmund
Daily Summary
  • Tour: Private Touring
  • Accommodation: Swakopmund Boutique Hotel
  • Meals: B

Private Touring

Enjoy this free day at your leisure. Swakopmund itself is a fascinating and intriguing resort town, complete with German half wooden architecture, monuments, historic buildings, well maintained gardens and palm lined avenues, coffee bars and great seafood restaurants. The weather is unpredictable, though temperatures rarely drop below 15C and rainfall is practically zero, the town is subjected to 9 months of morning fog each year. These damp and grey conditions often result in cool temperatures persisting the whole day, but this mist band, stretching up to 30km inland, gives water and life to the deserts plants and animals giving rise to 80 types of lichen and ancient Welwitschia plants. The many ingenious adaptations to water collection, like the Tok-Tokkie beetle which condenses vapor on its raised back, make for fascinating walks and drives in the ‘Moon Landscape’ or ‘Welwitschia Drive’, located close to the town.

In addition, there are many adventure activities such as sand boarding, tandem parachuting, fishing and quad biking which can be arranged prior to arrival. We can also recommend some excellent day trips including the marine sanctuary of Sandwich Harbor, a unique environment comprising towering dunes, a freshwater lagoon and the wild Atlantic Ocean. Alternatively, a half day boat cruise from Walvis Bay may offer the opportunity to see dolphins, fur seals and many species of marine birds. Please ask us for advice on restaurants, the more popular ones should be booked in advance and we are happy to do this for you.

Your Wilderness guide will be waiting at Palmwag Lodge to escort you from Palmwag Lodge to your camp.

Daily Summary
  • Tour: Private Touring
  • Accommodation: Serra Cafema
  • Meals: B, L, D

Private Touring

Your flight today will take you over the Harimannberge Mountain to one of southern Africa’s most remote and inaccessible regions. Situated on a lush green island in the Kunene River on the furthest border of the Skeleton Cost National Park overlooking Angola, Serra Cafema is one of Namibia’s most remote luxury lodges.

Situated under big shady Albida trees the camp comprises eight raised canvas and thatch chalets complete with en-suite bathroom, retractable glass facade with abundant outdoor lounging, dining and shower decks. The sounds of the rapids just downstream from camp contrast starkly with the views of the sand dunes of one of the driest deserts on Earth. The Ozonganda, or public homestead area, comprises indoor and outdoor dining areas, sunken lounge, river bar, library, shop and swimming pool.

The semi nomadic Himba tribes are the only local people in this area. Surviving virtually untouched by outside influences, they live a very simple, unchanged life style, similar to that of their ancestors who first settled in this region thousands of years ago. The river is the only permanent water source and produces a striking contrast to the surrounding harsh, dry mountains and dunes. Just to the south of the camp is the huge grassland plain of the Hartmann Valley, an area famed for its wildlife and scenic beauty.

Serra Cafema is often visited by the native Ovahimba families who live in the nearby vicinity, which gives guests the opportunity to learn about their lifestyle and traditions. One of the highlights of Serra Cafema is the carefully guided ATV excursions that tread lightly on the dunes, while allowing guests to experience a true desert.
