This exciting 5 day itinerary allows you to paddle through dense mangrove canals lush with wildlife and take part in a sea turtle conservation project recognized around the world as a model for community based conservation. You will learn about the importance of the green sea turtle's survival from your base camp on a secluded shell island. Spend time exploring Magdalena Bay discovering neighboring islands and hiking up pristine sand dunes that lead to miles of untouched beaches. Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 - Magdalena Bay Arrival

Depart early in the morning by van from your hotel in La Paz with your guide. Stop off for a tasty snack in the traditional ranchero lifestyle. Arrive to Magdalena Bay and head out in small craft to a secluded Island, your campsite and sea turtle monitoring base for the next 4 days. Meet your hosts, enjoy a tasty lunch, and settle in. A local expert will explain the in-water sea turtle conservation project, and during happy hour, answer questions. Dinner is served after sunset.

Day 2 - Magdalena Bay: Sea Turtle Monitoring

Monitoring begins! Early risers grab their coffee and board pangas or kayaks to help the fishermen set monitoring nets in the channel. Others watch birds, marine mammals and natural wonders over breakfast, and then paddle out to observe the nets. Pangas head out every 2 hours to check for turtles. In between, relax, eat, or take a brief kayak excursion. After dinner, your guide will take you on a tour through the night sky, dense with stars and constellations.

Day 3 - Magdalena Bay: Mangrove Exploration

After breakfast, grab a clipboard and head down to the beach to finish measuring and weighing sea turtles. Then release them back into the wild to conclude the monitoring. Enjoy lunch and a well-earned siesta. In the afternoon, paddle through lush mangrove canals teeming with birds and marine life. Your guide is your naturalist, combining local knowledge with ecology to show you the best of Magdalena Bay.

Day 4 - Magdalena Bay: Magdalena Island

Head out in the pangas to visit with local fishermen to see what they are catching. Learn about local fishing techniques. Stay on the boat or paddle your kayak over to Magdalena Island, a natural wonderland. Picnic at the foot of pristine sand dunes that roll down to the Pacific Ocean. (You’ve never seen sand dollars so large and beautiful). Back at camp, take a siesta or go bird watching with your guide before sunset. Talk real-life conservation with your hosts over dinner, then gather around the campfire for stories and stars.

Day 5 - Magdalena - La Paz Departure

After breakfast, you’ll head out in the pangas for more island exploration, meeting your hosts at a secluded picnic spot. Bid them farewell before heading back to La Paz. The photographs, stories, and memories you keep will tell the tale of the nature and wildlife adventure of a lifetime.

Accommodation Information

RED Magdalena Island Base Camp

RED Sustainable Travel's base camp is situated on Magdalena Island and is accessed and supplied by outboard skiff. With this in mind, RED has designed the camp to blend safety, sustainability and comfort.

The camps spacious tents are situate among the sand dunes, and provide stunning views of natural land and seascapes as well as local wildlife. All tents are outfitted with mattresses, linens and blankets. Towels are provided, and the bathrooms and shower are integrated into the landscape. As the camp is located in a remote and arid environment please respect the surrounding habitat and use water wisely.

The friendly local staff is anxious to make your experience as enjoyable as possible, and the WFR certified guides are equipped to attend to any medical emergency. RED's chefs are also happy to welcome you into the kitchen to show off their unique blend of regional cuisine with gourmet flair
