Berenty Lodge
Berenty Reserve, Madagascar
Prices From: $80
Since 1937, Berenty has been a private reserve in the ancient tamarind forest of the Mandradre river. Since then, lemurs living here have mostly lost their fear of man, and are easier to observe. Birds, butterflies, chameleons and tortoises, bats and numerous other animals from the Malagasy south are a joy to witness. Rooms and bungalows are equipped with a fan and mosquito nets.
The restaurant seats 100 guests, and there is also a bar, cafeteria, boutique and laundry service.
The de Heaulmes family, the owners of the Berenty Lodge, are committed to sustainable tourism and social development. Since the 1930s the family has been involved in preserving the rich biodiversity of Madagascar for visitors and locals to enjoy. Their efforts include the development of a private reserve in the forest of the Mandradre River, a botanical garden in Sayadi, and protection of a large forest of baobab trees close to Morondave.
On a community level, training and hiring of locals is seen as a priority, including for management positions, so that the economic development of the area can be supported. The family hires very few westerners among the executives (70% of them come from Tana, 30% from Fort Dauphin).
