A private retreat in one of Africa’s most remote and historical corners, Rusinga Island Lodge nestles on Rusinga Island, in the legendary Lake Victoria - the world’s second largest freshwater lake and destination of many intrepid 19th century explorers - in Western Kenya.
The lodge is 80 miles due west of the famous Maasai Mara Game Reserve. It is a 20-minute charter flight from Kisumu; a 35-minute charter flight from the Maasai Mara; and a 1 hour 30 minute charter flight from Nairobi. The airstrip is adjacent to the lodge’s impressive entrance, where you are greeted with ice-cold towels and refreshing, homemade lemonade.
Rusinga's renowned hospitality; delicious home-grown, home-cooked food; and indulgent accommodations combine to offer an ideal base from which to explore other areas of East Africa.
A place to calm the mind and rejuvenate the body, it provides a welcome break before, during or after a rigorous and exciting East African safari. Exuding an atmosphere of serene tranquility, its manicured lawns stretch to Lake Victoria's edge.
With their high-thatched roofs, spacious verandahs overlooking lush gardens and the sparkling waters of Lake Victoria beyond, the accommodations comprises of six self-contained cottages plus a family cottage with twin room and double room with an interconnecting door. Bedrooms are either double (with a king size bed) or twin (with two queen size beds) with a living area and dressing area. Oversized, en-suite bathrooms have double basins and walk-in, ‘soup-plate’ showers. Combining intimate charm and privacy with the highest level of personal comfort, the cottages are crafted from local materials.
The lodge offers full board accommodations, everything included; house wines, beers & soft drinks; all activities (except safaris to Ruma National Park) and even laundry service. Some of the things not included in price: Champagne & spirits; Spa treatments; safaris to Ruma National Park; gratuities and health insurance.
Mealtimes are flexible and wherever possible, ingredients are home-grown – an extensive vegetable garden provides fresh, organically grown vegetables and the grounds are dotted with fruit trees. Although all meals are table d’hote, should a guest have particular preferences or dietary requirements, these will be accommodated wherever possible and with prior notice.
The grounds, with its exotic trees, are haven for a myriad of bird species – many of which are unique to this small corner of Kenya. These spacious grounds offer a safe environment for children to release energy and the more active to catch up on exercise.
At the Lodge we are dedicated to improving the welfare of our neighbours and continually strive to improve basic standards of living whilst also preserving the natural habitat. Rusinga Island Lodge founded the Eddie Thackray Memorial School in 2005 and continues to support it. Reforestation initiatives like the tree nursery is helping to create forested areas on severely eroded tracts of the island.
Some of the activities offered at the lodge include, fishing, birding, hiking, biking tours, cultural tours, spa services and tours to Ruma National Park.
