Sumiya Ryokan
Kyoto, Japan
Prices From: $400 per person
Sumiya's authenticity expresses a quiet charm that is very welcoming. It is an excellent choice when planning a trip to Kyoto. There is a fusuma (Japanese sliding door) so you immediately feel as though you are visiting an old traditional Japanese home. Priceless Japanese antiques representing times past can be seen throughout the residence.
It is located in the eastern part of Kyoto in the heart of the main sightseeing district that includes Kiyomizu Temple, the Gion district (the old Geisha district), and Yasaka Shrine, and has been in business for 100 years.
Constructed in the traditional “sukiya” style of Japanese architecture, Sumiya includes a Japanese garden and tea ceremony rooms. Each room is designed uniquely to exude the consummately impressive Japanese architecture by displaying its own features. There are two Hanare (detached rooms) with an open air bath. Inevitably, you will find yourself lost in complete relaxation.
